Apply to Join our Staff
Thank you for expressing interest in the Virginia Review of Politics. We are currently accepting applications for the Spring 2022 semester. You can apply for and join multiple departments. In fact, that’s a great way to get further involved with the publications! No experience is required for any of our positions.
If you have any questions about a specific application or department, please email the head of that department (as indicated on the application) or our general email virginiareviewofpolitics@gmail.com. All applications are all due on February 16th, 2022 at 11:59PM. Thank you for your time, and we look forward to reading your application!
Editorials
The Editorials Department produces high quality op-eds about politics - broadly defined. You can see examples of past op-eds our writers have produced at https://virginiapolitics.org/online-posts. We are recruiting for a variety of positions, including Staff Writers (who produce two op-eds a semester), Junior and Senior Editors (who edit writers’ pieces and are in charge of a group of writers), and a Spanish Team (who produce original op-eds in Spanish). You do not need to have prior experience writing or editing for a publication, nor do you need to be a political wonk by any means. We are looking for writers to cover a wide range of topics as well as writers who offer unique perspectives.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to Managing Editor Will Ham (wrh5ebq@virginia.edu).
Interviews and Features
Interviews and Features comprises various platforms for staffers to stimulate conversations about current issues, local and global. In addition to interviews, being a part of this staff will give you the opportunity to create a podcast, host events and discussions, and other engaging projects. We are recruiting staff as well as an Interviews and Features Editor to oversee the department and be a part of the Executive Board. Staff are expected to produce two pieces a semester. More information about each position is within the applications attached below.
Please contact Managing Editor Will Ham (wrh5ebq@virginia.edu) or Editor-in-Chief Sofia Heartney (sah7ez@virginia.edu) with any questions.
Operations
The Operations Department is responsible for assisting the mission and operations of the Virginia Review of Politics. The Operations Department includes 5 teams:
Finance – fundraising, grant application, budget creation & expense tracking
Social Media – post creation & maintain a strong online presence (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn)
Publishing – create VRoP newsletter & ensure the VRoP website stays up to date (publishing content, designing layout, streamlining navigation)
Events – plan political and journalism related events open to all of UVA or closed professional development events for VRoP staff only
Partnerships – alumni network, relationships/partnerships with other CIOs & outreach efforts with the local and national community
The Operations Department is hiring multiple positions! There are 2 board positions – Treasurer and Publisher. In these positions, you will lead your respective team and attend weekly executive board meetings where you will be involved in all decisions made for VRoP. These positions do require a greater time commitment and more responsibility, however Will (the Operations Manager) will be there to assist you with any questions or issues that arise.
If you can not commit the time necessary for a board position, consider applying for a staff position, where you join one (or more) of the above teams. The staff positions are vital to the operation of VRoP and you will assist the board members with all necessary tasks. This is a great first introduction to VRoP where you will gain skills to use in a future board position or endeavor.
Email Operations Manager Will Nehrboss at wkn4dm@virginia.edu with any questions.
Productions
The Productions Department creates unique art, infographics, and photography for VROP’s website, social media, newsletters, and semesterly Print Edition. The team also works on the layout of the Print Edition using InDesign. You can see examples of the Production Team on our past print editions on our website virginiapolitics.org/print-editions and our social media graphics on our instagram @virginiareview. We are recruiting Productions Staff as well as a Productions Manager to oversee the department and be a part of the Executive Board. More information about each position is within the applications attached below. Please contact Operations Manager Will Nehrboss (wkn4dm@virginia.edu) or Editor-in-Chief Sofia Heartney (sah7ez@virginia.edu) with any questions.
